Canon Camera Connect Keeps Disconnecting

Why your Canon camera disconnects mid-session and how to keep the connection stable.

You’ve finally connected Canon Camera Connect to your camera, but the connection drops after a few seconds or minutes. Here’s why it happens and how to fix it.

Why Canon Camera Connect disconnects

There are several reasons the connection drops, and they often overlap:

  1. iOS switches to a network with internet. Your camera’s WiFi has no internet access. iOS periodically checks for internet connectivity and may silently switch your iPhone to cellular data or a nearby WiFi network. This is the most common cause.
  2. Screen lock drops the connection. When your iPhone screen locks, iOS may deprioritize or disconnect WiFi connections — especially ones without internet access.
  3. Camera sleep mode. Most Canon cameras go to sleep after a period of inactivity, which shuts down the WiFi connection. The camera’s power saving settings control this.
  4. Bluetooth interference. The iPhone uses the same antenna for Bluetooth and 2.4 GHz WiFi. When both are active, the WiFi signal can become unstable.

How to keep the connection stable

Prevent iOS from switching networks

This is the single most effective fix:

  1. Turn on Airplane Mode, then re-enable WiFi. This disables cellular data, so your iPhone has no alternative network to switch to.
  2. Alternatively, disable Wi-Fi Assist in Settings → Cellular (scroll to the very bottom).
  3. If you’re at home, forget your home WiFi temporarily (Settings → Wi-Fi → tap (i) next to your network → Forget This Network).

Prevent screen lock from killing the connection

Go to Settings → Display & Brightness → Auto-Lock and set it to Never for the duration of your session. Remember to change it back when you’re done.

Extend your camera’s sleep timer

In your camera’s menu, find the power saving or auto power off setting and set it to a longer interval (or disable it entirely while shooting). The exact menu location varies by model:

  • EOS R5/R6/R7/R8: Menu → Setup → Power saving → Auto power off
  • EOS Rebel T7: Menu → Setup → Auto power off
  • Older models: Check under Setup or Wrench icon

Disable Bluetooth to stabilize WiFi

If the connection is unstable but doesn’t fully drop, Bluetooth interference may be the issue. Disabling Bluetooth can dramatically improve stability:

  1. Go to Settings (the iOS Settings app — not Control Center, which only temporarily disconnects Bluetooth).
  2. Turn off Bluetooth.
  3. Note: This means you’ll need to connect to the camera’s WiFi manually each time, since the automatic Bluetooth-to-WiFi handoff won’t work.

Shooting outdoors helps

If you mostly shoot outside, away from home or office WiFi networks, you’ll likely find the connection much more stable. With no competing WiFi network nearby, iOS has no reason to switch away from the camera.

When reconnection requires a full reset

Some users report that after disconnecting, they can’t reconnect without deleting the camera from Camera Connect and re-pairing from scratch. If this happens to you:

  1. In Camera Connect, remove the camera.
  2. On your iPhone, go to Settings → Bluetooth and forget the camera device.
  3. On your camera, clear the wireless connection settings for the smartphone.
  4. Set up the connection again from the beginning.

This is a known issue with no perfect solution in Camera Connect.

A more stable alternative

If you’re tired of the disconnect cycle, Shutter handles connection stability differently.

Shutter stays connected to your camera even when you leave the app or lock your screen — so you don’t lose the session every time you check a text message. It also includes a built-in shortcut that automatically manages the Bluetooth connection for best WiFi performance, so you don’t have to manually toggle Bluetooth on and off.

The connection flow is straightforward: join the camera’s WiFi in iOS Settings, open Shutter, and you’re connected. No account required, no pairing dance.

Try Shutter free for 7 days and see if the disconnection problems go away.
